Comic strip about a turbulent neighborhood

Since 2017, the municipality of Eindhoven has been working on improving the quality of life in and around the tunnels in the city under the project name Tunnel Vision. The Eindhoven Center for the Arts (CKE) facilitated this, and approached Rake Lijnen to make an artwork in the Kruisstraattunnel, on the theme of “proud of Oud-Woensel”.

Oud-Woensel is one of the older neighborhoods in the city northwest of the station. The district is known for its authentic character and famous market, but also has social problems. I chose to look for the “hidden treasures” in the neighborhood, the places that people are proud of and that therefore have a connecting effect.

I developed the results of the conversations into a comic strip, which was placed on the northeast side of the tunnel. At the story I made a walking route, which starts at the CKe.

A selection of the drawings is available as limited edition framed print. For more informaton, see Ons Oud-Woensel Limited Editions.

Frits Achten, culture driver at the Eindhoven Centre of Applied Arts (CKE):

"Marnix managed a large project in Oud Woensel. Oud Woensel is a lively neighborhood. A lot of poverty. Culturally the most diverse district of Eindhoven. Marnix understood this neighborhood. And the residents understood and trusted Marnix. With a lot of humor and patience, Marnix collected the stories and investigated the identity of the neighborhood."
